Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
